B1 German Writing Practice
At B1, the reader should understand your position and how your ideas connect. Grammar still matters, but structure starts carrying more weight.
Learner fit
Who this helps
For learners who can write basic German but need stronger structure, clearer arguments, and fewer distracting mistakes.
Decision points
What to focus on
Clear opinion
The reader should know what you think before they reach the end of the answer.
Reason and example
Each main point should include both a reason and a concrete example, not only a general statement.
Coherence
Connectors should make the argument easier to follow instead of being added only for decoration.
When this page is useful
Use this page if your answers contain ideas but feel like a list. B1 writing needs a clear opinion, supporting reasons, examples, and a controlled ending.
What to practise first
Plan the argument before the paragraph. Decide your opinion, choose two reasons, and add one realistic example for each reason.
- Use connectors such as weil, deshalb, ausserdem, trotzdem, and zum Beispiel.
- Make the first sentence tell the reader your position.
- End by returning to the task instead of adding a new idea.
How to revise a B1 answer
After feedback, rewrite the transitions first. Many B1 texts improve quickly when the relationship between sentences becomes clearer.
A weak answer and a stronger answer
Weak: Ich finde Homeoffice gut. Es ist praktisch. Viele Leute mögen es. Stronger: Meiner Meinung nach ist Homeoffice praktisch, weil man Fahrzeit spart. Trotzdem braucht man klare Regeln, damit die Zusammenarbeit gut funktioniert.
What to check before submitting
Read the text as if you are the examiner seeing it for the first time. The opinion should be visible early, each reason should have an example or explanation, and connectors should show the relationship between sentences.
- Did I state my opinion in the first two sentences?
- Did I give at least one reason with weil or denn?
- Did my conclusion return to the question?

Ein großer Vorteil ist, dass man keine Zeit auf dem Weg zur Arbeit verliert.
Außerdem kann man zu Hause oft ruhiger arbeiten.
Ein Nachteil ist jedoch, dass der Kontakt zu Kollegen fehlt.
Zum Beispiel finde ich Besprechungen im Büro manchmal einfacher.
